About us

Who is The Global Couple?

Hi! We’re Petra and Shaun, a mid-20s couple from New Zealand.

Welcome to our little corner of the internet, The Global Couple travel blog! It’s great to have you along for the ride. We hope to provide insights into different and interesting destinations as well as travel tips, with a budget adventure traveller focus (because that’s what we do!).

About us

We’ve been together since 2007, and got married in April 2015! We both hail from Auckland, New Zealand and met when we were 18 at a New Year’s Eve party in the Coromandel, New Zealand. Our first overseas adventure was to Bali a year later, and from there our travel obsession took off!

Petra has a Masters degree in geography and works as a climate scientist at a New Zealand government research organisation. She loves photography, quirky souvenirs, and hiking. She also has a weird obsession for all things to do with baby animals – show her a cute kitten video and she’ll be happy!

Shaun is a carpenter and project manager at his own construction company. He loves craft beer, campervan road trips, and good food (especially steak). He’s a bit of an entrepreneur and is always coming up with business ideas, and he wants to build a tiny house one day. (July 2016 update: we’re currently building a tiny house!)

Together, we love challenging ourselves to try new things – as can be seen on our lengthy Bucket List.

We’ve bungee jumped backwards off a bridge in Canada, learned to SCUBA dive in Thailand, seen New York City from a helicopter, stayed in local’s houses on a trek in Myanmar, bought a campervan in New Zealand, camped in a $40 Wal-Mart tent for two weeks in northeast USA, saved baby turtles in Mexico, been around the world in two months.

About The Global Couple travel blog

Our aim is to embrace and understand different cultures, foods, customs, histories, and landscapes. We love learning as much as we can about a place before we go and whilst we’re there. The more we know the more we can appreciate it!

In late 2013 we visited Southeast Asia for six weeks, but that didn’t quench our desire for travel so in early 2014 we left our jobs, families, and friends in New Zealand to travel the big wide world. We were based in North America for 9 months in 2014, and are now back home in New Zealand. We’re looking forward to more domestic travel over the next wee while!

Head to our Where We’ve Been page for a list of countries we’ve visited so far, with links to our posts (or you can go to our Archives for a full list of posts). Our content is full of stories from the road, our favourite photos, travel tips, and even some GoPro videos!

We would love to connect with you on other social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest (we post heaps of other stuff there that we don’t post on the blog).

We’ve got the travel bug! And we hope you catch it too!

    Hey team,

Fellow kiwi here, loved looking through your NZ blogs. We definitely come from a pretty sweet country!

Couldn’t find a post on the coast to coast walk in Auckland, if you haven’t done it I highly recommend it (afternoon trip).

Was just wondering how you got your pieces featured on Stuff? I read enough news there, would be cool to have my own article in the travel section 🙂

Hey Jub! Thanks for your comment. We do come from an amazing part of the world! Can’t complain really! We haven’t actually done the coast to coast walk in Auckland – that’s going on the list of things to do as of now 🙂 Thanks for the suggestion! We submitted our articles through Stuff Nation, in the Kiwi Traveller section. It’s pretty cool to be featured on such a big site 🙂 Cheers!

  4. Hey guys,
Just wanted to say thanks for the great posts you’ve written on your gobsmackingly beautiful country. We used some of your posts as a guide for our own ‘highlight tour’ of New Zealand this past Sept/Oct. Very handy indeed. From an Aussie who LOVED New Zealand, I’m eager to read more so I will be following you. I’d seriously consider moving there but for now, my teenager is researching the possibilities of going to Uni there.

Hi Tara, thank you so much for your lovely comment! It made my day reading it 🙂 So glad that you found our NZ posts useful – feedback from people like yourself makes what we do on this blog worthwhile! We will be publishing more NZ content over the summer as we explore more of our country. Hope your teenager decides to study here – it would give you an excuse to visit often! Petra 🙂
