Stage One of QLC (Quarter-Life Crisis)

Things are falling into place!

We are flying out of Auckland bright and early on November 29th, heading to Bangkok. We’ll be there for 4 days, during which time we’ll see some sights we didn’t manage to see last time we were there in 2009 (including the Grand Palace – we got mixed up in one of those ‘Oh, but it’s closed today!’ scams, so determined not to let that happen this time), and we’ll get our visas for Myanmar too. Oh and maybe fit in some shopping at MBK too if time permits (…time will permit!)

Then we will spend 2.5 weeks in Myanmar (Mandalay, Bagan, Kalaw, Inle Lake, and Yangon) – can’t wait for Myanmar, everything I’ve heard about it sounds incredible. We’re looking forward to heading to a country that isn’t so heavily touristed and overrun by international brands, as most the other Asian countries we’ve been to (Bali and Thailand) most definitely are.

We’ll then return to Bangkok, and catch an overnight train and ferry to Koh Tao. Koh Tao is apparently one of the best (and cheapest) places to learn how to dive, so we’re going to submerge ourselves in the tropical waters of the Gulf of Thailand and get our Open Water qualification! Pia and Mike, friends from home, will join us on Koh Tao for New Year’s, which will be great. They’re keen divers so hopefully we will do a couple of dives with them too.

As if a week on the beach at Koh Tao wasn’t enough, we will spend another 4 days sunning ourselves and exploring Koh Samui. I’m seriously looking forward to lying on a lounger all day, cocktail in one hand, kindle in the other…

Following the island break, we will then head to Hong Kong for a few days of shopping and general crazy city-ness, and then fly back to NZ in mid-January.

Bring on six weeks of adventure!!!
