Hey, you guys up there in the Northern Hemisphere, freezing your butts off this winter!
You’re already making plans for when the flowers bloom and the sun is actually warm for once, aren’t you?
Well if you aren’t, you should be. And this summer, you should visit America’s northeast. I’m going to show you why.
Why you should do a New England road trip
Well, why not? There’s so much to see in this corner of the country that is jammed between New York and Canada. From whale watching to beer drinking to hiking in the region’s only national park, you’re spoiled for choice for what to do.
Here are some of our favourite things to do in the northeast USA!
Acadia National Park, ME
Acadia National Park is a beautiful slice of wilderness on the Maine coast. There are a number of camping grounds and heaps of hiking opportunities. The view point at the top of Cadillac Mountain is superb!
Whale watching at Gloucester, MA
Whale sightings are pretty much guaranteed on the tours from Gloucester. It’s a awe-inspiring sight seeing these ocean giants in their natural habitat and not on a TV screen!
Camping in the White Mountains State Forest, NH
The White Mountains State Forest in New Hampshire offers fantastic camping and some lovely hiking trails. The Kancamagus Highway is well worth a detour!
Eating yourself silly in Portland, ME
Portland (Maine) has some of the best food in the US! The dining establishments there have an emphasis on local, organic, seasonal, delicious produce. And it’s filled with cute little streets like this one – why wouldn’t you want to stop there?
Embracing Boston’s history, MA
You can’t visit the northeast without passing through Boston. It’s a lovely city, not too big and not too small. Spend the best part of a day walking around the historic centre – you won’t be disappointed!
Seeing the mansions of Newport, RI
These houses (can we really call them houses?) are seriously impressive. Unlike in The Hamptons, you can get up close and personal with these mansions with the coastal walk in Newport.
Cycling Cape Cod’s rail trail
The Cape Cod Rail Trail is a fantastic cycleway that goes most of the way up Cape Cod. It’s a dedicated cycle path so you won’t come across any cars (except for at the odd road crossing).
Sampling craft beer around the region
The northeast is known for its numerous craft breweries. Sample one, sample them all – there’s heaps of choice!
Photographing the cute colourful houses in Marblehead, MA
Isn’t this house just the most perfect house ever? Go to Marblehead and you’ll find streets and streets of them – you can lose track of time getting lost in the cuteness!
Although it’s off the coast of New England, put Martha’s Vineyard on your list – we hear it’s great!
Have you ever done a New England road trip? What places would you add to the list?
